Côr y Wiber

Mae Côr y Wiber yn gôr merched ifanc a bywiog o Gastellnewydd Emlyn, Gorllewin Cymru. Ffurfiwyd y côr yn wreiddiol fel Aelwyd Emlyn ddiwedd 2009 er mwyn cystadlu yn Eisteddfod yr Urdd yng Ngheredigion yn 2010. Yn dilyn y mwynhad a ddaeth o’r canu, y cystadlu a’r gwmnïaeth, penderfynwyd ffurfio Côr y Wiber dan arweiniad Angharad Mair Jones. Dewiswyd yr enw oherwydd hanes Gwiber Emlyn, sef y ddraig/wiber a ymosododd ar Gastellnewydd Emlyn. Yn ôl yr hanes, cafodd y wiber ei saethu i farwolaeth, a llifodd ei gwaed a’i gwenwyn i’r afon Teifi.

Ers ei sefydlu yn 2010, mae’r côr wedi mynd o nerth i nerth. Enillodd y côr y categori Corau Merched yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yn 2012 ac yn 2014, y category Côr hyd at 35 o leisiau yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yn 2013, ac hefyd cystadleuaeth Côr Cymru yn 2013. Mae’r côr wedi perfformio mewn nifer o nosweithiau anffurfiol a digwyddiadau ledled Cymru, ac wedi ymddangos ar y teledu ac ar y radio.

Mae’r côr newydd ddychwelyd o Lido di Jesolo (Yr Eidal), ar ôl cystadlu mewn un o ŵyliau corawl rhyngwladol Interkultur, lle derbyniodd y côr ddau ddiploma aur, ac Angharad wobr yr arweinydd.

Côr y Wiber is a young and vibrant choir from Newcastle Emlyn, West Wales. The choir was originally formed as ‘Aelwyd Emlyn’ at the end of 2009 in order to compete in the National Urdd Eisteddfod in Ceredigion in 2010. Having thoroughly enjoyed the singing, competing and socializing, Côr y Wiber was formed, with Angharad Mair Jones as conductor. The name of the choir derives from the myth of ‘Gwiber Emlyn’ – a dragon/serpent (‘gwiber’) that attacked the town of Newcastle Emlyn centuries ago. According to the tale, the ‘gwiber’ was killed and its blood and venom seeped into the river Teifi.

Since its forming in 2010 the choir has achieved success, winning the Ladies Choir category in the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 2012 and 2014, the Choir up to 35 in number at the National Eisteddfod in 2013, and winning the Côr Cymru (Choir of Wales) competition in 2013. The choir has performed in many concerts, appeared on television and radio, and performs regularly, both nationally and locally.

The choir has recently returned from Lido di Jesolo (Italy), having competed in an Interkultur international choral festival. The choir was awarded two gold diplomas and Angharad was the recipient of the festival’s conductor award.
